Education Transformations began operation in 2000 in
response to requests from families in the Katherine region of the
Northern Territory for their young people to access secondary
education. Education Transformations worked with these
families to develop the Family Group Home residential care
model. The number of homes quickly grew to ten with some
100 young people accessing quality 24 hour care and education in
Darwin's northern suburbs while retaining strong connections with
family and culture.
In response to requests in 2000 from communities to Darwin's
south Education Transformations began developing a similar regional
residential model of student care. Extensive collaborative
research in the region resulted in a successful application for the
resources to construct a regional residential College at Woolaning in
2002.
Many other communities began seeking assistance from
Education Transformations. Further research projects were
undertaken at Gawa
(2004) and Tiwi (2006)
resulting in two more remote community managed residential care
programmes. Other programmes have been implemented to support
the development of student care opportunities that can turn around
live opportunities of young people:
- Targeted and relevant training
programmes
- Families and Schools Together ( FAST)
family strengthening programme implemented in 28 Northern Territory
communities.
- Development of a web-based school - work
transition strategy for young people
- Strength-based RAP training for all who
work with challenging young people
- School-based programmes that engage
Indigenous young people
