What is Life Space Crisis Intervention

LSCI logoLSCI is a strategy to turn crisis situations in to opportunities for young people to learn new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving. LSCI is related to Response Ability Pathways (RAP) training and is a 4-day intensive training for key people within organisations that work with young people. The training focuses on developing specific skills for connecting with and reclaiming troubled children and young people involved in self-defeating patterns of behaviour.
Stage 1 Crisis
Staff de-escalating skills to drain off young person's intense feelings while controlling one's counter-aggressive reactions.
Stage 2 Time Line
Staff relationship skills to understand and validate the young person's perception of the crisis.
Stage 3 Central Issue
Developing diagnostic skills to better understand patterns of self-defeating behaviour
Stage 4 Insight
Staff clinical skills to pursue the young persons specific pattern of self-defeating behaviour for personal insight and accountability
Stage 5 New Skills
Staff empowering skills to teach the young person new social skills to overcome this pattern of self-defeating behaviour
Stage 6 Transfer of Training
Staff consultation and contracting skills to help the young person re-engage using newly acquired social skills.
Research by the Education Department in the ACT has found the use of LSCI techniques "has been effective in reducing school suspensions and increasing teacher confidence and efficacy in managing very disruptive behaviour patterns"
LSCI is relevant for practitioners in education, training, health, foster care, youth-at-risk, juvenile justice and law-enforcement. The LSCI training was developed by Dr Nicholas Long at the University of Michigan and the National Institute of Mental Health in the USA.

People - Mark Freado LSCIMark Freado is President of Reclaiming Youth International, and the most experienced trainer of Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) in the world and he is also a senior trainer of Response Ability Pathways (RAP).  Mark's 30-year professional career encompasses contributions to the mental health field, public education, social services, program development, leadership, consultation, and training. Dr Freado has worked with private providers, public agencies, and schools throughout the United States as well as Canada, Europe, and Asia, delivering consulting and training services. He specializes in program development, leadership skills and interventions for at-risk and disadvantaged children, adolescents, and their families.
Learning Outcomes
Matching specific reclaiming interventions with each of the seven patterns of self-defeating behaviour and utilizing a six-step sequence and specific communication skills for each reclaiming intervention.
Reflecting on how certain problems of youth relate to the helper's own personality and values.
LSCI training is grounded in specific competencies for resolving crisis and reducing disruptive behaviour.
